The doctoral program at Abat Oliba University is a research doctorate that is designed to be dissertation only. For that reason, there are no required courses. Students simply write the dissertation. To prepare for this, the program does have the equivalent of a 5-credit research and design requirement for those who have never written at least a master’s thesis. At the present time, all material in the research and design modules are delivered in the Spanish language. AOU is working on the development of English language research, design and thesis writing courses. The courses are as follows:

The . program prepares educators to take leadership roles in improving educational systems and advancing student learning and success. The low residency, three- year cohort-based structure of the program is ideal for working professionals, and the focus on applied research allows participants to have an immediate impact on the quality of education in their work environments. The Pre K-12 Leadership and Higher Education Administration concentrations allow participants to develop expertise in specific settings and issues. The program will also engage students, faculty, and other members of the education community in integrated inquiry into issues that span our educational systems. This unique combination of deep understanding, expanded vision, and diverse professional networks positions participants for innovative, entrepreneurial leadership in a complex and changing world.

If the student has explored all other options and still wish to change supervisors, he or she should talk to the graduate program director. If the supervisor happens to be the graduate program director, the student should talk to the chair of the academic unit. If the student remains uncertain or dissatisfied, he or she should talk to the vice-dean graduate studies of his/her home faculty. Beyond that, the student can talk to the university ombudsperson. The student can request that the exchanges with any or all of these individuals (directors, vice-dean, ombudsperson) remain confidential.

There were similar developments in many other continental European universities, and at least until reforms in the early 21st century many European countries (. Belgium, Spain, and the Scandinavian countries) had in all faculties triple degree structures of bachelor (or candidate) − licentiate − doctor as opposed to bachelor − master − doctor; the meaning of the different degrees varied a lot from country to country however. To this day this is also still the case for the pontifical degrees in theology and canon law: for instance, in Sacred theology the degrees are Bachelor of Sacred Theology (STB), Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL), and Doctor of Sacred Theology (STD), and in Canon law : Bachelor of Canon Law (JCB), Licentiate of Canon Law (JCL), and Doctor of Canon Law (JCD).
